When should you call us?
When you are having contractions
- If it is your first baby you should call us when
the contractions have been occurring every 3 minutes for an hour.
- If it is your second or third baby call us when you are having
good contractions every 5 minutes.
When the waters break
Always call immediately if:
- The amniotic fluid is green or brown
- The head has not descended (we will tell you about this at
surgery)
Call
during daytime if:
- The water has broken. If the contractions have
not started please visit the surgery in the course of the day.
Call in the morning if:
- The water broke in the night, the head has
descended and the amniotic fluid is clear (looks like tap water
but often with small flakes and a bit of blood in it). Try to
get some more sleep.
When there is loss of blood
Always call immediately
if:
- You are losing as much or more blood than you
would during a menstruation. A little loss of blood with some
slime in it is normal (spotting) as this is a sign that the cervix
is preparing to dilate for childbirth. You do not have to warn
us for this kind of spotting. It can easily take a few more days
before delivery really starts.
If you are worried
Don't hesitate to call us any time if you are worried about something. In
the evening and at night worries tend to increase. Often a phone call is enough
to stem these worries.
IMPORTANT
Everything is best explained if you call yourself; we get the information
first hand then.
If someone else calls for you, let him/her use the name by
which you are registered.
